Name That State for Windows
User Document
A. Overview
Name That State for Windows ("NTS") is a geography program
intended for use by middle grade school students. However it is useful
for anyone wanting to learn the geography of the United States. It is
programmed to run with Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, and Windows
95. It may reside on a floppy disk or hard drive.
With NTS you can learn, then test your knowledge about the United
States and its capitals. You'll find out when each state came into the
union, its' nickname and why it's called that. The program is
completely 'menu driven' and has six (6) modes of operation:
1) Study states - The states are displayed in a random order showing the
state capital, date in union, state nickname and how the nickname
came to be, and a piece of trivia about the state.
2) Test on states - A state is highlighted on the US map, and displayed
on an inset. The user is then asked to select which state this is from
four choices. The states are displayed randomly as are the multiple
choice. This state can be put back in the shuffle if desired. If the
answer is correct, the state is removed from the shuffle and painted
on the US map. A right/wrong score is then displayed. If the
answer is wrong, the state is removed from shuffle and saved for
review after all 50 states have been presented. In either case the data
on each state is displayed when the answer is given (ie: capital, date
in union, etc...).
3) Test on capitals - This is the same as 'Test on states' mode except the
multiple choice is of four (4) different cities.
4) Show states - A state name is given and the user selects that state
from the U.S. Map. A mouse is required for this mode.
5) Show capitals - A state capital is given and the user selects the state
with that capital from the U.S. Map. A mouse is required for this
mode.
6) Review - This mode is entered automatically if any answer was
incorrect. A review of all missed states or capitals is presented.
B. Sound
Sound support is currently managed through the PC's internal speaker.
Support for sound cards will be added in future versions. The PC
speaker has NO volume control except for frequency. Some PC's are
very loud and are more of a nuisance than a help. Therefore, If you wish
to turn off some or all of your sound a function has been provided.
There are 3 different sound controls in NTS, as follows:
1. Wrong answer ----- is a warble
2. Correct answer --- is a ripple
3. Music ------------ National Anthem and more
Each sound has its' own on/off switch and is accessed from the first
screen or the main menu. The national anthem is played at start up only.
Pressing any key will stop the music.
